An Gof

An Gof was written in 2007 for the Fast Machine Youth Wind Orchestra. The piece is based on the Cornish rebellion of 1497 when Michael Joseph, known as An Gof (the blacksmith in Cornish), along with Thomas Flamank, lead an army of cornishmen to London. They marched on London to complain about the high level of taxation being imposed on Cornish people by the Crown of England to fund a war against the fellow Celtic nation of Scotland. The leaders of the uprising, An Gof and Flamank were hung drawn and quartered with their heads being displayed on poles at London Bridge.
