They Don't Belong
They Don’t Belong was written in response to a news story I heard about a fishing village in Cornwall called Helford, a village close to my home in Cornwall.
In January 2009 Helford became national news as an argument had broken out between “The Helford Village Society” that was made up of second homeowners and the local Fishermen. The local fishermen wanted to build a Jetty so that it would be easier for them to land their catch. Planning permission was granted for the Jetty but an appeal by “The Helford Village Society” was launched to have it overturned. The outcome of the appeal is still to be announced.
I find it hard to believe that people who only visit a village a couple of weeks in a year can have such a say in the running of that village and by doing so effect the very livelihoods of the local people.
